Mirazur in Menton, France, has been named the best restaurant in the world. Argentine-born Mauro Colagreco¡¯s restaurant on the French Riviera has been steadily climbing The World’s 50 Best Restaurants list since it landed on the scene at number 35, in 2009. And last year it came in at number three. Mirazur¡¯s tasting menu is known for its seasonal ingredients, sourced where possible from the three levels of cascading vegetable gardens, with dishes including salt-crusted beetroot with caviar cream; eggs served with smoked eel and hazelnuts; and brioche of potatoes with melting egg and white truffle. This accolade arrives in the same year that the French Riviera restaurant wins three Michelin stars.

In January, the World¡¯s 50 Best announced that any restaurant that has previously taken the top spot on the list will be disqualified from subsequent editions of the list, and will instead be moved to a new list, titled The Best of the Best. This means that last year¡¯s winner, Osteria Francescana in Modena, Eleven Madison Park in New York and El Cellar de Can Roca in Girona have all been knocked off the main list.

Noma 2.0, Ren¨¦ Redzepi’s Copenhagen restaurant, however, was deemed new enough (new location, new concept) and came in at number two on the 2019 World’s 50 Best Restaurants list. Number three on the list is Asador Etxebarri in Atxondo, Spain which was number 10 in 2018. This year¡¯s highest climber was Azurmendi in Larrabetzu, Spain, which rose 29 places and now stands at number 14. The Basque country restaurant is known for its focus on sustainability.

This year, only two London restaurants made the list: The Clove Club and Lyle¡¯s. The Ledbury in Notting Hill and Heston Blumenthal’s Dinner both dropped off this year’s list.

The award for The World’s Best Female Chef has gone to Daniela Soto-Innes, of Cosme in New York, which came in at number 23. The award caused controversy last year due to the paucity of female chefs who made the grade. Northern Irish chef Clare Smyth won the award in 2018, but her restaurant Core in Notting Hill has still never made the top 50. This year the top 50 list includes just five restaurants helmed by female chefs. Dominique Crenn, one of a handful of US chefs to win three Michelin stars, made this year’s list for the first time, at number 35. Leonor Espinosa¡¯s Leo in Bogot¨¢ also moved into the top 50, at number 49.

The Best Pastry Chef award was given to Jessica Pr¨¦alpato of Alain Ducasse au Plaza Ath¨¦n¨¦e in Paris. And the One to Watch award went to Lido 84 in Gardone Riviera, Italy.
