The Oscars 2021 red carpet ushered the return of a failsafe beauty staple that many of us have missed over the last year: lipstick. With not a mask to be seen, stars wore all manner of different lipstick shades ¨C with some swapping dramatic eyes for lip looks ¨C but the big trend of the night was deep berry reds, oxbloods and plum shades. In fact, the darker and more vampy, the better.

A first case in point is Vanessa Kirby, whose velvety deep red lip was offset with a strong brow and very little eye make-up, save for a lick of mascara. Precisely applied, the oxblood hue set off both her alabaster skin and blue eyes ¨C the power of lipstick in motion. And then there was Celeste; her cherry red lipstick was applied for impact and matched the red tones of her ensemble and clutch, as well as her manicure.
