Taking the plunge with a new hair colour is one thing, but the latest trend to hit celebrity circles is rather more drastic: bleached brows. From Maisie Williams, who appeared at the Brit Awards on Tuesday with brows that matched her newly platinum blonde hair, to Kim Kardashian, who had hers bleached for a photoshoot earlier this month, the divisive trend is having a resurgence after years spent dormant.

¡°My bleached brows, I¡¯m into it,¡± Kim said to camera as she filmed her new otherworldly look on Instagram Stories. ¡°Can¡¯t wait to show you guys the final look.¡± Deploying bleach to lighten brows is actually a relatively simple process ¨C and a quick way to completely overhaul your look. Commonly used for editorial shoots or major events (see: the Met Gala), it¡¯s the ultimate way to make a statement, but unsurprisingly feared by anyone who would be showing theirs off at the office, rather than on a red carpet. But though Maisie and Kim took their brows to palest white, it is also possible to take dark brow hairs just a few shades lighter, for a softer version of the same look.

British Vogue¡¯s picture editor, Parveen Narowalia, experimented with the look a few months ago. ¡°I¡¯ve always been curious about bleached brows, so lockdown was the perfect chance to try it out,¡± she says. ¡°My brows are black, so I tried hair bleach and, unfortunately, was left with bright yellow brows, which really wasn¡¯t the desired effect. In the end, I bought a cheap, ashy blonde box dye to tone it down and I finally got it right. While the upkeep for bleached brows is especially hard for dark hair, I really enjoyed it, and I¡¯m planning on bleaching them again soon.¡±
