If there¡¯s a time to experiment with new and exciting hair colours, it¡¯s the summer. Especially hot girl summer 2021, once we¡¯re finally able to let loose and enjoy the freedom that was taken away from us during the pandemic. It is this spirit which informs one of the biggest hair colour trends this year: blue. And, more specifically, sea blues, whether turquoise or deep navy. ¡°When it comes to colour, there is a need for self-expression and playfulness at the moment,¡± explains colourist Josh Wood. ¡°Blue is this year¡¯s answer to the pink and red hair trends that so many experimented with during last year¡¯s lockdowns.¡±?

Alex Brownsell, co-founder and creative director of Bleach London, agrees. ¡°Now, I think people are more confident to experiment and express themselves as we come out of lockdown. We¡¯re seeing a huge increase in the popularity of experimental colours. People are more willing to try something brighter that doesn¡¯t fade as quickly, like blue tones.¡± Online searches for ¡°pastel blue hair¡± are also up 67 per cent year on year, and both experts have seen a surge in clients requesting the colour in salon ¨C from azure to pastel. Consider it escapism in a hair colour, and your one-way ticket to daily holiday hues.

But can everyone pull off a water blue hue? Both experts maintain it¡¯s a shade everyone can make work in some form. A breeze for those with darker and olive skins to pull off, Wood acknowledges blues can be trickier for those with pink and pale skin tones. In these cases, his advice is to opt for a nod to blue ¨C just dipping the ends, or incorporating gentle blue ¡°pieces¡±. Meanwhile, Brownsell recommends looking at your blue clothes or cooler, blue-toned make-up for inspiration as to what shade to opt for.

¡°It¡¯s a really simple look to create; the starting point has to be light hair ¨C anything from bleached to highlights or balayage, but it must be blonde,¡± says Wood, while Brownsell adds that toning first is essential to neutralise any warm or yellow tones in the hair, ¡°otherwise the blue will have a green undertone¡±. Keeping hair in good nick ¨C ensuring it is as hydrated and healthy as possible using intensive home hair treatments ¨C is key to a beautiful colour that stays put, too.
In fact, Wood formulated his own newly-launched Blue Reef Hair Glaze, to nourish the hair while imparting colour, thanks to a mask base which contains ingredients like shea butter and pequi oil. The result is blue hair colour accompanied by lustrous shine?¨C?plus, it washes out after six shampoos, so it¡¯s great for the commitment-phobes. Bleach also offers an array of blue home hair colours in its Super Cool range, from the pastel blue Bullini to Washed Up Mermaid, a vibrant turquoise. The latest, Blue Weekend, was created in collaboration with the band Wolf Alice. ¡°It¡¯s a sapphire blue and it was named after their album,¡± says Brownsell.
