2. Popular at PUBLIC Hotel, Lower East Side

Not many hotels are famous for their escalators. But PUBLIC Hotel, on the Lower East Side, is an exception to the rule for its iconic neon staircases. The prettiest restaurant in this Ian Schrager-imagined stay was new in 2021 ¨C a foliage-lined Peruvian-spiced spot from Diego Mu?oz, the chef at Lima¡¯s Astrid y Gaston, a fine-dining super spot that was once number one on The World¡¯s 50 Best Restaurants list.

3. Bakeri, Brooklyn

The floral wallpaper at Bakeri¡¯s Williamsburg location has gained a life of its own on social media, and the newer Greenpoint location is just as charming. Settle in at a wooden table for one of the freshly baked pastries and admire the small, thoughtful details of the space: the arched wooden ceiling, the shabby-chic wooden panelling, the menu on the antiqued mirror and, of course, the floral wallpaper.

Eataly

5. Serra by Birreria, Madison Square Park

A very smart greenhouse on the rooftop of the original Eataly by the Flatiron Building, Serra is a seasonal space that totally transforms with the change of weather several times a year. The rustic menu changes with the seasons too, but you can always expect hearty plates influenced by the Italian countryside. The current Serra Alpina captures the cosy atmosphere of an Alpine apr¨¨s-ski experience, with snowflake-encrusted trees bowing over the tables.

Address: Serra by Birreria, 200 Fifth Avenue, New York NY 10010

6. 1803, Tribeca

Let the good times roll: there¡¯s a little slice of?New Orleans?in downtown Manhattan with interiors as bold as its Cajun flavors. It almost feels as if you¡¯re on a Hollywood set for a French-Vietnamese film with actors and singers perched in each booth. The food is every bit as good as it was in the restaurant¡¯s heyday, so come for the spicy beef salad and stay for that cloud of cool.

9. Le Coucou, SoHo

American-born chef Daniel Rose had already conquered the fine-dining scene of Paris, with Spring and La Bourse et La Vie, when he brought his culinary genius to New York with Le Coucou in 2016. Still a hard reservation to snag, the space is as well-known as the menu, thanks to a sprawling painted mural of a rural scene in muted colours that would look at home in a French chateau. The dramatic chandeliers and floor-to-ceiling windows keep the elegance going in this Roman and Williams-designed space.

The main room¡¯s murals of famous poets, First Ladies, authors, composers and the like were created by caricaturist and cartoonist Edward Sorel.
